Running an escape room constitutes running a business. I know that many will even start rooms just for fun, and understandably so; I also enjoy the process. However, there are simple decisions that can be made as a proprietor to maximize revenue, user retention, and user enjoyment.

One of those decisions is to get the coolest, more immersive and high-tech puzzle designs. Breaking out of the standard escape room mold means going beyond a few locks and keys and tables. Incorporating puzzles that include lighting changes, sound, motion and other user feedback goes a long way. Having the entire room built on this principle means users know to expect engaging experiences as they move through the room, and this leads to larger satisfaction, and even recommendations to others to check out the location.

Another important element is using a theme and including a story behind the room. Most do this, however not all rooms are thoroughly attached to the theme in a meaningful way. An outer space-themed room, for example, should use many cool features of the theme in the puzzles and the escape process. I know a lot of details about the themes on which I base my designs, allowing me to make very unique and interesting puzzles within those themes.

Finally, using unique solution-flow principles can help the experience stand out a lot. Alternate endings, user-determined flow pathways, and even collection games (where you return multiple times to the same room to gather different success items and piece them together) are a few ideas I can help you incorporate to bring your room to the next level.

If you already have a room, or a plan for a new room, but want to boost the quality of your puzzles, I can work with you in getting the best tech and designs built in. You can also commission puzzles for new rooms or as replacements for your existing room to bump up the wow-factor. Finally, if you want plans and/or puzzles for alternative solution flows, I can create an experience for users that has alternate endings, user-chosen paths, and success-collection experiences to encourage return visits!

Starting a new location and want to have the entire room experience designed ahead of time as a drop-in purchase? Get in touch! I’ll have complete room and theme ideas, complete with all puzzles and control flows required to complete an engaging and exciting room. You can choose some of my pre-selected themes, or else specify a theme around which I’ll create an entire room. You’ll receive all of the plans, explanations, back stories, and drop-in puzzles that are self-contained, so you can install them. Then you can decorate the room as you see fit on top of this backbone plan. We can consult on what level of material you want from me and what you’d like to do yourself as well.
